If a senior is frail or disabled and can't be left by themselves during the
day an Adult Day Health program may be an option. There are a number of excellent programs in the Boston area. We would
like to thank Cooperative Elder Services in Lexington for providing the following information.
These programs typically operate from 8 am to 5 pm. They are either in stand alone
facilities or coupled with an Assisted Living Facility, such as Cooperative Elder Services which is located at Youville Place
in Lexington. Most can also provide transportation to and from the facility.
You can expect these programs to provide a structured
environment for your relative. Many social and recreational activities are offered as well as counseling services and
restorative services such as physical and speech therapy. Many facilities can also offer shower facilities. This
is especially important since safe bathing is frequently a major concern.
Some programs, such as the one offered by Cooperative Elder Services, also have specialized Alzheimer's Day Care.
This can be especially important given the intense need to focus on client's cognitive and habilitative needs.
Generally these programs are on a private pay basis although there are some medicaid,
Veteran's Administration and State home care slots available. You can expect to pay $40-$60 a day with transportation
Combining an Adult Day Care program with services from a Home
Care Agency such as Home Instead Senior Care can be very cost effective. By arranging to have the Home Instead Caregiver to be at the elders home prior to the arrival
of the Adult Day Care Transportation dinner can be prepared and the elder can be gotten ready for bed.
